Access to mobile services, including mobile broadband, has helped unlock an array of new opportunities and services that are enhancing the livelihoods of the world’s most underserved populations, spurring economic growth and enabling the mobile industry to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over the period 2014-2020;

  • the number of people subscribed to mobile services increased rapidly, from an estimated 3.6 billion 5.2 billion , and is estimated grow by a further 600 million people by 2025. 
  • an estimated additional 1 million towers have been added bringing the global total up to approximately 5 million.

Of these 243,000 are in off grid or poor grid locations, with 88% of these sites running diesel generators producing 7 million metric tonnes of CO2.
